How will I be charged for legal services?
Most of our work is billed at our lawyers’ hourly rates. Once we understand what you need, we’ll give you an estimate of our fees so you know what to expect.
For some services, we offer flat fees. This includes things like residential purchases and sales, incorporations, annual corporate maintenance, and certain other corporate matters. If you’re not sure what’s included, just ask – we’re happy to walk you through it.
In addition to legal fees, there are taxes (5% GST and 7% PST) and out-of-pocket costs, like filing fees or payments to third parties, called “disbursements” that come up as we move your file forward. We’ll outline everything clearly in your invoice so there are no surprises.
Do you charge for consultations?
That said, we usually start with up to 15 minutes of complimentary time. It’s a chance for us to understand what you’re dealing with and for you to get a feel for how we work. From there, you can decide if we’re the right fit before moving forward.
How can I keep my legal fees to a minimum?
We know cost matters, and we want to handle your matter as efficiently as possible. One of the best ways to keep fees down is to help us move things forward clearly and efficiently from the start.
Here are a few ways you can help:
1. Fill out any intake forms or questionnaires as completely as you can.
2. Read through the instructions and resources we send you carefully.
3. Give us clear, complete instructions about what you need.
4. Send us all relevant information and documents as early as possible.
5. Let us know right away if anything changes that could affect your matter.
6. Reply to our questions promptly when you can.
7. Try to gather your thoughts and send one organized set of comments or responses, rather than several messages.
8. Keep us updated so we’re not spending time following up for information.
9. When it makes sense, start with the assistant on your file before reaching out to the lawyer directly.
10. Take time to consider decisions carefully, and try to avoid changing course unless it’s necessary.
Good communication and timely information can go a long way toward keeping your file moving and your costs more manageable.
How can I pay for an invoice or retainer?
E-transfer

By phone
We can process Visa and MasterCard payments over the phone.
