Cynthia Lam

Lawyer & Owner

Cynthia is the owner of GBC Law and also leads the firm’s Business and Real Estate law practice. She advises clients on how to make informed decisions based on their objectives and assists with all aspects of business and real estate ownership.

In addition to her legal work, Cynthia is actively involved with the Burnaby Board of Trade as a director and member of the Pacific Gateway and Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity Committees. She is also volunteers her time as a mentor to students through the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers BC and spearheads various community initiatives through the firm in support of causes such as Refood, Greater Vancouver Food Bank, Burnaby SPCA, Elizabeth Fry Society, and London Drugs Stocking Stuffers for Seniors.

As a lawyer, Cynthia is fulfilled by helping people navigate through complex situations and seeing local businesses succeed. Outside of work, she enjoys trying out new restaurants, spending time with her dog, and expressing her creativity through her Etsy shop.

Jeffrey Young

Jeffrey Young leads the firm’s Entertainment and Intellectual Property Law practice at GBC Law. With over three decades of experience, Jeff helps clients protect their creative work, navigate complex rights and licensing issues, and make strategic decisions in an ever-evolving digital and media landscape.

Before joining GBC Law, Jeff built a distinguished career as one of Vancouver’s foremost entertainment lawyers. His portfolio includes major film and television productions such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The New Addams Family, and Breaker High, as well as serving as the first-ever Olympic Digital Rights Lawyer for the 2010 Winter Games. He has represented a wide range of clients, from emerging artists to Grammy and Oscar winners, and has negotiated with industry leaders including Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Sony, and Disney.

Jeff is also deeply involved in the creative community. He has served as Director of Contracts and Chief Negotiator for the Union of BC Performers, sat on the board of the Whistler Film Festival, and taught entertainment and intellectual property law at UBC, BCIT, and the University of Victoria. A film composer and music producer himself, Jeff is passionate about helping others bring their creative visions to life.

Outside of work, Jeff enjoys composing music, exploring British Columbia’s film and arts scene, and supporting the next generation of creative professionals through mentorship and education.

Minyoung does not believe in “one solution fits all” when it comes to helping clients.

Minyoung Lee

Minyoung assists GBC’s clients with personal planning and anything estate-related, whether it be preparing a Will, Power of Attorney, or Representation Agreement, setting up a Trust, obtaining grants of probate or administration, obtaining a committee order, or dealing with estate disputes. When it comes to helping clients, Minyoung does not believe in “one solution fits all”. She recognizes that every client has different priorities when faced with a legal issue and that there are often different ways to resolve any issue. With this in mind, Minyoung focuses on tailoring solutions based on the client’s concerns and does so with efficiency in mind.

Growing up, Minyoung did not always have aspirations to become a lawyer. Prior to graduating from the University of Alberta in 2016 and beginning her career in law, she worked in retail management and an assisted living residence for seniors and gained extensive customer service experience. Her passion for listening, advising others, and problem-solving eventually led her to switch her career path. As a lawyer, she loves being able to apply her skills to help clients feel at ease and in control, and finds this very meaningful and rewarding.

Outside of work, Minyoung enjoys spending quality time with her family. The best piece of advice she’s ever been given is “You have to earn your future, otherwise, you continue living in the past”.

Effie Wu

Effie supports GBC Law’s business law clients, with a focus on accessibility and clear communication. Her approach helps clients understand clearly and realistically what to expect through the legal process. This is important to Effie because she wants clients to feel at ease and able to focus on their lives without added stress from legal matters.

Effie’s path to law began early. Growing up, she was the go-to person for her parents who ran a small business in Burnaby and didn’t speak English as a first language. Whenever questions came up, Effie stepped in to help find answers. That experience shaped her interest in law and her desire to continue to support through sharing knowledge. The best advice Effie has received? “The first time you do something might be very difficult, but with experience, each subsequent time will be easier.”

Outside the office, Effie enjoys trying new restaurants, watching horror movies, and playing board games or video games with friends. A fun fact: Effie lived in Japan for over a year and a half.

Joanna Shen

Diving into the intricacies of the Metro Vancouver real estate market is what Joanna does on a daily basis. Her love for organization, combing through details, and comfort with working under pressure allows her to thrive in this fast-paced world! She’s also certified as both a Legal Administrative Assistant and Paralegal.

To serve her clients best, Joanna often finds herself trying to see the world through the lens of her client. This allows her to dial into spotting problems and offer proactive solutions before they come up.

Outside of work, Joanna enjoys yoga, reading, and bullet journaling. The best piece of advice she’s ever been given is “To accept all the pieces of life – the wrong turns, traumatic moments, bad choices and their consequences, along with all the magnificence and beautiful, life-affirming decisions – and to own them all.”

At GBC Law, you will find Valerie primarily assisting with Real Estate matters. With previous experience in a realty office, Valerie was inspired to join a law firm to specifically learn more about conveyancing and to master the process from beginning to end.

To best serve clients, Valerie is trustworthy, organized, and prepared. In fact, Valerie strives to be a “mind reader” and diligently anticipates needs so that she can answer any question before it is ever raised.

In times of stress, Valerie’s motto is to stay calm, breathe, and grab a coffee. In her free time, you will most likely find Valerie relaxing at home reading, playing video games, and watching her favourite movies including the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings series.

It all started with a summer internship as a legal assistant – after that, Nancy had a drive in her to pursue a career as a Paralegal.

At GBC, she assists with both Corporate and Estate Administration services – and each area is special to Nancy for different reasons. However, Nancy wants people to know that dealing with lawyers is not like how it appears on TV! On the Corporate side, Nancy enjoys the rush of a good old time crunch. On the Estate Administration side, Nancy likes understanding people and the finer details of their lives.

You can often find Nancy deep in another world, whether it’s reading a book or listening to an audio book!

As the firm’s founder, Greg works with clients who have been trusting GBC Law for 50 years, as well as those who are stepping through the doors for the first time. Greg didn’t always know that practicing law was his passion, having studied both Arts and Commerce before entering law school. By becoming a lawyer, Greg was forced to overcome his natural tendency towards shyness in order to encourage others to open up and be able to advocate on their behalf – and he’s never looked back.

Today, Greg enjoys getting to know his clients – their businesses, but also their lives. When you’re working with Greg, get ready for quick quips and witty humour! When he’s not at the office, you can find Greg spending time with family and friends, enjoying music and theatre, and volunteering at the South Burnaby Metro Club.
